A 102 -year -old man reached the summit of Mount Fuji, breaking the record of the oldest climber

A 102 -year -old Japanese has set a new record by becoming the oldest of the Mount Fuji summit.

Kokichi Akuzawa began his ascent on August 5 with her 70-year-old daughter, Motoe, her granddaughter and her husband and friends, according to the Associated Press.

Akuzawa told AP that he was impressed that he climbed so well, sharing that he was better to climb when he can still.

“I was really tempted to abandon halfway,” he said. “Reaching the summit was difficult, but my friends encouraged me, and it went well. I managed to go through because so many people have supported me.”

The mountain of 12,388 feet high is the highest in Japan and was appointed a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013.

Akuzawa has overcome heart problems, zarmes and a climbing injury. Three months before the summit, he started training while wake up early for long walks and climbing a mountain every week, according to AP.

This is not the first time that Kuzawa has established the record. He climbed the mountain at the age of 96.

“Mount Fuji is not a difficult mountain, but this time was more difficult than six years ago. Stronger than any mountain before,” said Akuzawa.

The mountain was a place of pilgrimage and is now increasingly popular among hikers.

In 2023, more than 220,000 people climbed the mountain between July and September, according to the BBC.

“I never felt so weak. I had no pain, but I kept wondering why I was so slow, why I had no endurance,” added Akuzawa. “I had long passed my physical limit, and it was only thanks to the strength of all the others that I did.”

The mountain hiking trails are only officially open from July to early September, although there is no penalty for hiking out of season.
