The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced on Thursday new sanctions which he described as “necessary” to “dissuade and dismantle” the flow of mortal fentany in the United States.
The new policy imposes new restrictions on visas on family members and relatives personal and commercial partners of foreign drug traffickers.
Speaking with journalists Thursday afternoon, the spokesperson for the State Department, Tommy Piggott, said that this decision “would prevent them not only from entering the United States, but also dissuasing continuous illicit activities”.
In a press release published by the State Department, Rubio stressed the importance of expanding sanctions to stop the fentanyl flow and other drugs in the country.
“The fentanyl crisis in the United States is unprecedented, with overdoses remaining the main cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 44,” said Rubio.

The secretary said that “more than 40% of Americans knew someone who died of an overdose of opioids, and in 2024, the United States had an average of more than 220 deaths by overdose”.
“Today’s action extends over existing tools,” he said, adding that the State Department “will use all the tools necessary to dissuade and dismantle the flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs to enter the United States and harm American citizens”.
Fentanyl is a dangerous drug that is often tampered with in the United States through the southern and northern borders by cartels and other criminal elements. In 2024, fentanyl was linked to the death of 48,422 people in the United States, according to the CDC.
During his campaign, President Donald Trump promised to wage a war against fentanyl traffickers thanks to increased border security and repressing illegal immigration. Since his entry into office, Trump has deployed American troops on the southern border, targeted cartels and transnational criminal groups as “foreign terrorist organizations” and has struck cartel leaders with sanctions.
