The candidate for the town hall of the New York Democrat mayor, Zohran Mamdani, obtained the support of one of the most influential personalities of the American left while seeking to decide the former governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic appointment.

Mamdani, 33, member of the New York State Assembly, obtained the support of the former presidential candidate on Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT.

It is a major boost for Mamdani, who also marked the approval of the progressive representative of the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shooting brand, DN.Y., thus locking the two most important national figures of the left. Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders participated in a “oligarchy tour” nationally earlier this year which exploited dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and sought to energize the democratic socialist movement while pleading for policies similar to Mamdani.

“We need a new policy and a new leadership that is ready to resist powerful business interests and to fight for the working class,” Sanders said in a statement, according to several reports.

“Zohran Mamdani is carrying out an inspiring basic campaign, focusing on the construction of 200,000 affordable new housing, a freeze for rents, free public buses, a reduction in fines and costs for small businesses, investments in mental health services on the city level, grocery stores belonging to the city, universal grocery courses and an increase in minimum universal wages.”

Sanders also said that Mamdani will pay his program by taxing the richest 1% of New Yorkers, and said that his campaign was largely funded through donations in small dollars, “unlike the business democratic establishment”, in a Cuomo excavation.

Mamdani has increased in the last polls of public opinion in the mayor’s primary race and is now a clear second to the most moderate former governor.

“At this dangerous moment in history, the policy of the status quo is not good enough,” Sanders, born in Brooklyn, wrote on Tuesday, sharing a Mamdani article on its approval. “We need a new leadership ready to resist powerful business interests and fight for the working class.”

Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and moved to the United States at the age of 7, sprang with the approval of his post.

“As with so many people through this country, @Berniesanders was the most influential political figure in my life,” wrote Mamdani. “As mayor, I will endeavor to respect his example by fighting for the working class every day and, hopefully, make Brooklyn’s proud.”

With several progressive candidates in the primary race, Mamdani’s approval by Sanders seeks to unite progressive voters fractured towards a single candidate in order to block the most moderate CUMO to return to power.

The president of the New York Municipal Council, Adrienne Adams, and the senator Jessica Ramos are among the progressives still in the race. Ramos even approved Cuomo while remaining in the race herself.

Four years ago, New York progressives failed to unite with a single candidate, who paved the way at the time of the mayor, Eric Adams, a moderate democrat, to win the primary and finally the general elections. Adams announced in early April that he would present himself to his re -election as an independent candidate rather than requesting the appointment of the Democratic Party.
