A retired Navy and State Department national security expert waded into the political fray Tuesday, announcing an attempt to unseat Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., by invoking New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in an attack on Democrats.
David Williams, a newcomer to politics, said his service overseas, at the State Department and in national security has made him “truly appreciate how incredible America is,” and used a quote from Mamdani in saying, “The far left is eating away at the very fabric of what makes America great.”
“It made me want to fight for her even more. Make no mistake, we are fighting for the future of our country,” Williams said in a campaign ad released Tuesday morning.

In the ad, it contrasts conservative values with images of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani yelling at law enforcement and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., gesticulating during a session of Congress.
Williams said he would be a partner with President Donald Trump in supporting “the country, the Commonwealth and our families.”
He said that although he never knew his biological father, it was his stepfather, whom he calls his father, who instilled in him the ideals of hard work, conservative values and love of country.

Virginia Republicans suffered massive losses on Election Day 2025, with Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears losing by double digits to Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger.
The GOP also lost more than a dozen seats in the House of Delegates as Democrats flipped all three offices in a row.
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has been criticized for his far-left political agenda.

In the clip used as a brief backdrop during Williams’ campaign launch, Mamdani shouted “Do you believe in the First Amendment” at fellow New Yorker and border czar Tom Homan as he visited the state Capitol in Albany.

Mamdani, then a deputy from Astoria, had to be restrained by New York State Police as he continued to yell at the immigration official from West Carthage.
He was also called a “communist” by popular local right-wing commentators, including 77WABC’s Sid Rosenberg.
