Kim Jong Un demonstrates new ballistic missile at Pyongyang military parade

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday deployed a new long-range intercontinental ballistic missile during a military parade in Pyongyang attended by foreign leaders.

The Hwasong-20, which has not yet been tested, was described by the Korean Central News Agency as having the “most powerful strategic nuclear weapons system.”

The government also deployed short-range ballistic, cruise and supersonic missiles during the military parade, which marked 80 years since the founding of the Workers’ Party.

Kim said during the parade that the military “must continue to evolve into an invincible force that eliminates all threats.”

Foreign dignitaries at the parade included Chinese Premier Li Qiang, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Vietnamese Communist Party leader To Lam.

Kim also met with Medvedev on Friday, who praised the sacrifice of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russia in Ukraine.

Kim said he hoped to strengthen ties with Russia and work together toward common goals.

Last summer, Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned the United States not to try to restart negotiations focused on denuclearization, adding that Pyongyang would view any attempt to pressure North Korea to denuclearize as “nothing but a mockery.”

“If the United States does not accept the new reality and persists in a failed past, the meeting between the DPRK and the United States will remain a ‘hope’ of the American side,” Kim Yo Jong said, referring to the nation by its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
