The government’s closure entered its sixth day on Monday, and the Senate Democrats are so firmly planted in their position as there is an agreement on the expiration of Obamacare tax credits, they will not reopen the government.

The head of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, Dn.y., and his caucus remained largely unwavering in their request that the Republicans and President Donald Trump accept an agreement on tax credits, which should expire by the end of the year.

This is one of the many requests they have made in their counter-proposition to the continuous resolution of the GOP (CR), and seems to be the one they believe to be the most feasible. Their other requests, repealing the health care section of the “large and beautiful bill” and putting railings on cancellations, are a non-start for the Republicans and the White House.

However, no part that has made unrelated requests in a government closure fight left with a victory. The last closure of the government in early 2019 saw Trump demanding that the Democrats finance his border wall, and he moved away from empty -handed.

Throughout last week, the Democrats of the Senate maintained a posture that they wanted the Republicans to come to the negotiation table on subsidies, which are fixed at sunset at the end of this year. The conversations between the members are underway, which Schumer and the head of the majority of the Senate John Thune, Rs.d., encouraged.

“We want the Democrats to speak with the Republicans,” said Schumer. “And so it’s a good thing.”

But, he was countered that the Republicans had not offered “something really new – the same old things”.

“And so, nothing new on (Obamacare), nothing in cancellations,” he said. “And so, look, the Democrats want to go back and negotiate again, but they were able to negotiate with something, get something in return.”

The initial thrust of the Democrats was to make the subsidies – created during the COVVI -19 pandemic to facilitate the cost of health premiums available through the Acto (ACA) – Permanent Care Act. The subsidies were then improved by the law on the reduction of inflation in 2022 when the Democrats had a trifecta in Washington. This change abolished the income ceiling on subsidies.

The Republicans said they wanted to develop something on tax credits, but that there should be program reforms.

“Improved or Obamacare subsidies are inflationists and rates have increased because this program is fundamentally defective in a designed way,” said Thune. “This does not mean that it cannot be reformed and repaired. This can, but we cannot reach this conversation as long as we have opened the government.”

The legislators should again vote on the CR of the Republicans, and it should again fail for a fifth time on Monday, since no agreement has been concluded on the weekend. The two parties agree that an agreement will not come from the highest level, but will have to be brought negotiations between the basic members.

Senator Mike Rounds, RS.D., was directly involved in the membership negotiations and said that the Republicans wanted to tackle the question of Obamacare. But Democrats must first agree to reopen the government.

“It would be good if Senator Schumer could say that his closure is over, but we suspect that members of his conference will take to make this decision on behalf of,” Rounds said.
