So can testosterone really help you open hermetically or make you feel like a professional wrestler at 80?
Here’s what experts say.
What is testosterone?
“Testosterone is mainly produced in the testicles, with a small portion from the adrenal gland,” the public committee of the public media of the American Urological Media Association and Director of Homme Health at the Cleveland Clinic, in Fox News Digital.
While boys become adolescents, the pituitary gland in the brain triggers testosterone production.
“Testosterone deficiency is quite common, affecting almost 10% of men over 50.”
The hormone helps keep bones and strong muscles, maintains libido, produces sperm and controls hair growth and body fat in men, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The hormone begins to decline naturally as men age. “Testosterone deficiency is quite common, affecting almost 10% of men over 50,” Bajic told Fox News Digital.

Certain conditions which can cause low testosterone include the following elements.
- Problems with the glands in the brain which control the production of testosterone
- Testicle injury
- Cancer
- Side effects of chemotherapy
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Obesity
- Side effects of certain drugs
Symptoms and diagnosis
Many symptoms of low testosterone can imitate other health problems, according to Dr Tanya Munger, nurse practitioner specializing in endocrinology at the Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina.

Men can ask their primary care physicians to carry out a blood test to check their testosterone levels, advised Munger. A diagnosis requires two separate blood tests carried out early in the morning (or two hours after awakening) which show total testosterone levels below the normal reference range.
A low level of testosterone is generally considered to be less than 300, but the normal beach depends on the laboratory performing the test, added the doctor.

If testosterone levels are normal, the patient must ask a doctor to assess other causes of symptoms, added Dr. Susan Spratt, endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine.
When looking for treatment
For those with low levels of testosterone without reversible cause, the first strategy should be to target lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise, according to Bajic. If these are not effective, testosterone replacement treatment can be recommended.
“The options include gels, injections, testosterone pastilles established every few months and oral testosterone,” Bajic told Fox News Digital.

Therapy should generally be reserved for men who have symptoms of hypogonadism, a condition where the body does not produce enough testosterone, according to endocrine society.
The diagnosis of hypogonadism can however be difficult because the symptoms are sometimes non -specific and can overlap other medical conditions.

Routine screening for testosterone levels in the general population in the absence of symptoms is not recommended, according to experts.
Testosterone tests and prescriptions have almost tripled in recent years, with a third of the men put in therapy without responding to hormone deficiency criteria, according to the American Urological Association.
Potential therapy risks
Testosterone can increase the number of red blood cells, noted Spratt. “It seems to be a good thing – and it is if you have anemia, but there is one thing like a good thing.”

High levels of red blood cells can increase the risk of stroke and coagulation, noted the doctor.
Testosterone can increase the chances that the prostate widens, causing urine blocking. It can also increase the growth of prostate cancer for those who already have the disease, warned Spratt.

- Acne or oily skin
- Decrease in the number of sperm (increasing risk of infertility)

- Increased breast tissue (gynecomastia)
Testosterone can also trigger mood changes, especially for those who take higher doses than body needs, said Spratt.

For those who have normal testosterone levels and are starting to follow therapy, which can lead to too high levels, which may include significant, cautious risks.
“Some research shows that testosterone therapy may increase the risk of heart disease, but the data is contradictory and not conclusive,” added Munger. “The risks can be minimized while keeping the total testosterone levels in a healthy beach and not exceeding the normal boundaries.”

Testosterone replacement therapy is designed to restore normal hormone levels in men with a deficiency, not to increase or optimize performance, noted Munger.
