The Democratic candidate for the post of governor in the representative of New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, once again refuses to approve the candidate of his party to the neighboring New York.

“I am not engaged in this race because I am completely focused on New Jersey. I will let the residents of New York decide on this race,” said Sherill at a candidate forum for the governor.

Sherrill’s response comes as some Democrats continue to consider Zohran Mamdani as politically toxic since President Donald Trump and Les Républicains aim to anchor the 33-year-old socialist mayor’s candidate with vulnerable democrats for the election this year or halfway up next year.

During the Friday forum, which was organized by Pix11 News, Sherrill said that the voters of New Jersey did not ask him questions about the race of the New York town hall, which attracted a lot of national attention after Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other Democrats in June to win the appointment of the mayor of their party.

“The people of New Jersey constantly tell me about affordability,” she said.

“They tell me about their cost, electricity, housing prices, etc., health care. They are worried about the gel of the gateway tunnel funds,” said Sherrill.

In the midst of the government’s closure, the Trump administration announced this week that it interrupted federal funding for the massive gateway tunnel project to build a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York.

Asked a second time at the New York race forum, Sherrill replied: “Once again, I focus on New Jersey’s race, and it’s a New York race. I’m not registered to vote there. So I’m focused here.”

The closure of the Federal Government Sparks Blame Game in the crucial race for the governor

While Sherrill’s comments at the Friday forum reiterated previous declarations on Mamdani, his republican rival in the 2025 ballot battle to succeed the Democratic Governor limited to Phil Murphy terms accused him of trying to have them in both directions.

This summer, the candidate for the Governor of New Jersey of the GOP, Jack Ciattarelli, underlined in a Social media message The past comments of Sherrill, one saying that she did not weigh on New York’s race, as well as another of her saying: “If he is the Democratic candidate, which seems to be, I suppose that I will do it.”

The Mamdani, born Ugandan, was elected, would become the first Muslim and first millennial mayor of the most populous city in the country. He is the clear precursor in the last surveys of public opinion in the race for the town hall in the city dominated by the Democrats.

Mamdani is seated on two -digit tracks on Cuomo, who presents himself as independent in the general elections, and the republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, in the latest surveys of public opinion in New York.

While the National Democratic Committee and some best Democrats support Mamdani, others have kept their distance and have not yet approved.

New York governor Kathy Hochul recently approved Mamdani, but the head of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, and the minority chief of the Hakeem Jeffries room, the two main Democrats in Congress and New York colleagues, refused to support him.

Mamdani has reached the primary democratic victory thanks to an energetic campaign which has emphasized the affordability and the high cost of New York life. It was fed by a huge local army of supporters and the support of the best national progressive champions, including representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dn.y., and Senator Bernie Sanders, I-VT.

Mamdani has made intelligent use of social media platforms, including Tiktok, while he was engaging in low propagation voters. He proposed to eliminate the prices to set up the vast bus system from New York, making rents from Cuny (University of the City of New York), freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free daycares” for children up to 5 years and the establishment of grocery stores managed by the government.

Mamdani was strongly criticized by his rivals for his distant platform on the left, as well as his verbal attacks against Israel, his critical comments spent on the New York Police Service (NYPD), and his proposal to remove certain responsibilities from the NYPD and to focus on social services and community programs.
