The agreement is a rare example of cooperation between Tehran and Washington, which saw increased tensions following this summer strikes on Iranian nuclear installations. Iranian officials told Times that the expulsion agreement had occurred after months of discussions between the two nations.
While Washington and Tehran are barely working together, the arrangement aligns with the broader repression of President Donald Trump against illegal immigration. Earlier this year, the administration expelled migrants from several countries, including Iran, in Panama under a separate agreement, according to reports.
“In the first stage, they decided to expel 120 Iranians who entered illegally in the United States, most of which through Mexico,” the director general of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Reuters, which described the Iranian as a semi-official.

The identity of the Iranian deportees is unknown, but the Times reported that the group included men and women, some of whom were couples. The point of sale also noted, citing Iranian officials, that some of the deportees volunteered to leave the United States after spending time in detention centers, while others did not go voluntarily.
Iranian officials also told Times that in almost all cases, the deportees had refused asylum requests or had not yet appeared before a judge for a hearing on their requests.
“We have urged the American government to respect the rights of Iranian migrants and their rights of citizenship under international law. They must not be refused consular services, a fair judicial process or the principles devoted in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” said Tasnim news agency.
Another official told the news agency that the expelled persons had left Iran legally, but the way they entered the United States was “another case”. However, the manager insisted that their return “makes no obstacle, because Iran will always support its citizens”.

The deportees are confronted with uncertainty in their return to Tehran, where the regime is known for its brutal human rights violations, in particular towards women. Iran also faces an economic crisis, noted Times, with high inflation, unemployment and a falling monetary value.
