Florida receives a major increase in federal funding, as state and federal leaders announced on Friday a “historic agreement” with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the 287 (G) program.

Governor Ron Desantis joined the deputy director of ICE, Madison D. Sheahan, and other Tallahassee officials in Florida, to announce that the State will receive more than $ 28 million, with an additional $ 10 million led to the application of local laws. Funding is part of the distribution of $ 1.7 billion at the national level as part of President Trump’s “Big and Beautiful Bill”, said Sheahan.

“The state of Florida has really implemented a historic number of support for our 287 program (G), with more than 4,700 officers who carried out arrests on criminal illegal foreigners,” said Sheahan.

Florida has also created a full -time immigration application unit within the road patrol – supposed to be the first of its kind at the state level, officials said.

“This is a partnership we are here to boast, a partnership that Governor Desantis has made a priority, so that we can let everyone know how important it is to be part of our 287 (G) program,” said Sheahan.

“Florida is not Portland,” said Desantis. “If you think you can launch attacks against ice agents in this state, you have something to come. We will keep you responsible very quickly and very severely.”

The announcement comes after an ice prisoner was killed, and two others were injured on Wednesday when a shooter opened fire on an agency in Dallas. The FBI treats the incident as a “targeted attack” against the agency. The suspect, identified as Joshua Jahn, would have opened fire while ice police officers made prisoners in the building.
