When President Donald Trump went on stage at the United Nations General Assembly (Unga), the telepromitator did not work. But whatever – it was about to deliver a series of points which he knew well, and which broke the typical UN script.
Sometimes the world leaders moved uncomfortably in their seats, especially when he accused that the UN did not help the United States put an end to the wars and joked that everything he had obtained from the institution was trapped on a stepplay and a broken telepompter. However, in his brand style, Trump also pulled the laughter from the room, succeeding in being both affable and scolding at the same time.
“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked, after telling how he – not the UN – had ended seven wars.
From there, he embarked on a long address which approached each of the modern UN priorities – climate change, Ukraine, the reinstalling of refugees and the Palestinian state – and rejected each of them, disturbing many participants.

Latvian Minister for Latvian Affairs Baiba Braže said that Fox News’ digital leaders had taken note of Trump’s blunt style and the scanning program. She stressed that her remarks had lasted “a whole set of international questions”, from Ukraine to Gaza. She underlined her criticism of Russia, saying that it was clear that he wanted war to end and were openly disappointed by President Vladimir Putin.
Former American diplomat Hugh Dugan noted that even if Trump had hammered the UN, he did not hurry for the reform as well as expected.
“As for the UN reform and criticism and to guide it through financial crises and endemic dysfunctionality, he surprisingly left a void instead of a story,” said Dugan. “He has neither validated nor criticized the UN as planned, except by emphasizing the obvious views of his largely shared administrative and diplomatic passivity.”
Climate change
For the UN, climate change is an existential threat requiring global action. Trump made fun of the whole concept as “the greatest work of con never perpetrated in the world”, making fun of green energy like “all bankruptcy” and declaring the carbon footprint “a hoax”. By rejecting decades of climate work at the UN, he said: “More global warming, more global cooling, regardless of hell, is climate change.”
Braže noted that European nations still consider the UN as the central forum to tackle global problems, even if the reforms are late. “We could differ in our opinion where we always think that the UN is a precious organization and that the United Nations Charter is an international system”, she said, adding: “Of course, it needs change … Intensify efficiency.”

Ukraine
Trump and the international organization are largely aligned that the war in Ukraine ends, but Trump suddenly criticized its European members for continuous dependence on Russian oil.
Trump argued that the war “would never have started if I was president” and accused NATO allies of hypocrisy and said that certain NATO allies “financed war against themselves” by buying Russian oil.
“They buy oil and gas from Russia while they fight Russia. It is embarrassing for them … They must immediately stop all energy purchases in Russia.”
He threatened prices unless Europe cuts Moscow energy purchases, but blamed India and China as “the main war donors” thanks to Russian fuel purchases. The president also once again promised a “very strong round of powerful prices” if Russia refuses peace.
Trump must make funding for the United Nations conditionally to real, exhoraic reforms

Braže said Latvia welcomed Trump’s commitment to end the war, even if it underlined the dependence on Europe with regard to the United Nations system. “He also explained, of course, his efforts to achieve peace in various regions that we welcome,” she said.
Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna echoes Trump’s point that Russia’s war effort is not unstoppable. “As for the president’s speech, it was good to hear that Trump is dedicated to peace in Ukraine, and he also suggested that Russia was defeated. We also believe it,” said Tsahkna. “Estonia has long declared that Russia’s energy exports are its main source of income, and the engine behind its war in Ukraine. This is why we have to do more to cut this funding.”
Migration
When the UN considers migration as a shared humanitarian challenge, Trump painted it as an “invasion”. He accused the United Nations of financed illegal immigration to the United States, invoking UN species and food aid for migrants, and warned that uncontrolled migration “ruined” Europe.
“The UN is supposed to stop invasions, not create them and not finance them,” said Trump. “Your countries are ruined. Europe is in serious difficulty. They have been invaded by a force of illegal foreigners as no one has ever been seen before.”
He said migrants in London wanted to impose the “Sharia”.
“I look at London where you have a terrible mayor, a terrible and terrible mayor. And it was so changed, so changed. Now, they want to go to Sharia law, but you are in a different country. You can’t do that.”
Braže said that the Baltic States share skepticism with regard to uncontrolled migration, rooted in their history under Soviet domination. “In some European countries, politically correct has overcome the need to limit immigration. For us in the balls, immigration has always been something that is quite skeptical,” she said. “This is due to the fact that when the Soviet Union occupied us for 50 years, we could not define our own rules … So today, we are very clear that our borders are our borders, we control them.”
Palestinian state
While the UN pushes the recognition of the Palestinian state as part of a two -state solution, Trump has castigated efforts such as “a reward for Hamas”. He argued that this would encourage terrorism and rather demanded the immediate release of Israeli hostages – and called peace.
Dugan said the White House carefully calculated the way to manage the Palestinian problem. “He denied having added advertising for Palestinian state matter, while stealing his detractors from a snarky quote on which they depend.
“We must immediately stop war in Gaza. We must immediately negotiate peace,” said Trump.
But French President Emmanuel Macron said that if Trump really wanted peace, he had to put pressure on Israel to end the war.
“There is a person who can do something, and it is the American president. And the reason why he can do more than us, it is because we do not provide weapons that allow the war in Gaza to be waged. We do not provide equipment that allows the war to lead to Gaza.
Macron continued: “I see an American president who is involved, who reiterated this morning from the podium:” I want peace. I have resolved seven conflicts “, which wants the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Peace Prize is only possible if you stop this conflict.”

Behnam Taleblu of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies said that Trump’s treatment of Iran, where the president praised offensive strikes from the United States on Iran’s nuclear program, was distinguished in particular. “Calm and even the casualness with which President Trump spoke of the elimination of military leaders of the Islamic Republic in Unga today shows an understanding and a desire to embrace the status of American superpower against his opponents that it is not often seen,” said Taleblu.
The wider UN message
Beyond individual problems, Trump’s message was that the UN itself failed. He ridiculed his dependence on “strongly written letters” and his expensive renovation projects, depicting the body as corrupt and ineffective.
“I attended Unga a few times. I have never heard a speech like this. Trump was right on one thing: the UN is paralyzed”, “Tobias Ellwood, a former British deputy, shared on X. But he warned that the major conflict is” likely to follow “if the UN dissolves like the League of Nations.
But Dugan suggested that Trump did not stop offering a roadmap. “He went to level 2 subjects (immigration and green energy) because they are level 1 with Maga,” he said. “Given the telepromote and the escalator, it seems to be resigned from the fact that the place is not a teaching regarding the recovery of the organization – certainly not while (Secretary General Antonio) continues.”
Trump launched a UN exam six months ago, and Dugan said he hoped to know more about his conclusions in the speech. It is “not easy” that the exam was “deep, good or even finished”.

For the future, Dugan warned that Trump’s silence on the deeper reform of the UN has left space for competitors. “Next: Let’s see if China now publishes its speech to attach itself to fill the missing narrative vacuum cleaner,” he said.
Behnam Taleblu of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies said that Trump also made a point on the lack of commitment of the UN. “The president also ruled that he received a relative silence from the United Nations system and its leaders in the face of numerous ceases and the deconflict agreements that he helped to make brokerage in the Warzones around the world. For an organization aimed at stemming or resolving conflicts, the silence is deafening.”
