The new UN ambassador Mike Waltz warned on Monday that the United States and its allies will defend “each thumb” from NATO territory after Russian fighter planes violated Estonian airspace.

“The United States is standing next to our NATO allies in the face of these airspace violations, and I want to seize this first opportunity to repeat and emphasize the United States and our allies will defend NATO territory every centimeter,” Waltz said during the opening remarks of the United Nations General Assembly. “Russia must stop dangerous behavior urgently.”

The warning marked one of Waltz’s first public statements since he won the Senate confirmation on Friday. It came a few days after three Russian mig -31 planes stole deep into the Estonian airspace – the closest foray into the construction of the Baltic Nation Parliament over the years – Moscow fears are testing NATO resolution.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna, revealed on Monday morning that the jets were armed. The jets were in Estonian airspace for 12 minutes.

Tsahkna noted that Russia remains a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council when it continued its war in Ukraine and is now growing in NATO territory.

Article 5 of the NATO Treaty states that an armed attack on one or more NATO members in Europe or North America is considered an attack on them all. In practice, this means that if a member nation is attacked, the others are determined to take measures.

Waltz, a former member of the Florida Chamber, was President Donald Trump’s national security advisor until May. Its confirmation at the UN was retained in the Senate until last week, when a vote of 47-43 confirmed it as a permanent US representative of the United Nations Security Council.

A separate vote to confirm it as an American representative at the General Assembly has not come – it is not clear if it will have an effect on his participation in Unga.

The Estonian foray followed an incident where at least 19 Russian drones entered Poland airspace a week after Polish President Karol Nawrocki met President Donald Trump in the White House. Last week, Romania reported that a Shahed drone of Russian origin was found on its territory.

Russia has called on reports of “baseless accusations” incursions.

“There is no evidence, except Russophobic hysteria from Tallinn,” said Dmitry Polyansky, the first permanent representative of Russia in the UN, referring to the capital of Estonia.

“There was a time when Europe was associated with the Renaissance, at the forefront of the Enlightenment of philosophy, culture and science. However today, unfortunately, all of this has disappeared and it left for good,” continued the representative.

Polyansky said that the “only ideology” of European states is “primitive hatred” for Russia.

“All events are immediately interpreted by an anti-Russian prism,” he said. “The idea that war with Russia is inevitable is frantically frankly in the head of the European population.”

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Jet Incursions in Estonia at the request of Tallinn.

“Russia ‘reckless actions not only represent a violation of international law, but also a destabilizing escalation which brings the whole region of conflicts together in recent years,” said Tsahkna.

“Such provocation is deeply disrespectful towards the collective and tireless efforts of the international community to end the Russian-Ukraine war and to restore peace and stability in accordance with international law.”
