Fairies – known as Domus de Janas in Sardian – go back over 5,000 years at the end of the Neolithic and copper.

The name comes from local folklore, which imagined the rooms as homes for magic beings. Despite the fanciful name, the structures are actually tombs.

The superintendence of Sassari and Nuoro reported that “many significant discoveries” have been discovered, including picosaxes, a spindle verticille and a small ax of green stone.

Archaeologists also came across obsidian fragments and pottery bursts. The most complex house – nicknamed falls from Roman vases – contained a painted wall band, officials said.

Archaeologists noted that the land between the previous graves has shown characteristics suggesting more rooms, which led to the last Sardinian excavation. (Overness of archeology, fine arts and landscape for the provinces of Sassari and Nuoro)

It also contained more than 30 ceramic pieces from the Roman era, including plates, oil lamps and jugs. The declaration described all artifacts as “in excellent condition”.

Together, the tombs are part of a broader area called the archaeological complex of Sant’andrea Priu, which was recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
