The assassination of Charlie Kirk arouses security fears at the Congress: “ they are afraid ”

The legislators of the House on both sides of the aisle were agitated on Wednesday while the news was traveling on the murder of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

A member of the Congress described a “dark atmosphere” during the series of evening votes in the chamber while the legislators counted with the tragedy of Utah – which resurfaced the concerns concerning their own security in what has become a political landscape responsible for emotion.

“If we do not do something about it, a member of the congress will be killed,” said representative Randy Fine, R-Fla., Told Fox News Digital. “The people of my family asked me today not to present themselves to the re -election. I mean, they are afraid.”

The legislators have been forced to count with their own security several times in recent memory.

“They almost killed Donald Trump, they killed Charlie Kirk, both outside,” she said.

Fine said, “I’m probably going, you know, stay in the bubble plus in Washington that I could not otherwise.”

Others, such as representative Carlos Gimenez, r-Fla., Have suggested that legislators and other political figures should be granted by more lax authorizations, despite the strict Washington Fire Fire Laws.

“I know that we have 435 of us. It’s a bit difficult, but each of us is there in public, and there are madmen,” said Gimenez.

“I was sufficiently concerned about my security to have a weapon license hidden in the state of Florida. And perhaps, I know that the laws on arms here at DC are different, but perhaps … if you are a political figure, you are a representative or a senator, perhaps these things, you know, we must be exempt for our own personal security.”

He added: “I hope it will not happen, but there can be a tragedy, and things will change. And I hope things will change before having a tragedy.”

“You cannot help yourself,” said another republican of the house at Fox News Digital when asked if they were now more concerned with their own safety. “People always live their lives, but the subject of conversation is almost exclusively tragedy … It puts a lot in perspective.”

A second republican of the Chamber told Fox News Digital that they would also limit outdoor events but were skeptical about the feasibility of protecting all members of the Congress when they are back in their original districts.

Kirk was killed by what the authorities described as a long-range distance when she was expressed during a student event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. The 31 -year -old man, who was widely recognized for Energizing Voters from Gen Z to introduce himself to Trump in 2024, leaves behind a woman and two young children.

President Mike Johnson, R-La., told journalists on Thursday morning he had heard “that many members on both sides of the aisle” on the concerns on their part and their loved ones about their security.

“We are currently in a deliberate examination process to determine which measures are appropriate, how much we can allocate this,” said Johnson.

A third republican of the Chamber told Fox News Digital that they were “devastated” by the murder of Kirk and said that they had gradually increased their own security since assassination attempts on Trump in 2024.

“Our office regularly increased its security protocols after the assassination attempt of potus last year, and we regularly increased these precautions throughout this year, because we have observed increased emotions and increased tensions during public events. We are already using security for most public and external events, and we will continue to do it,” they said by text message.

Others told journalists on Wednesday that they were also concerned about themselves, but refused to develop in the immediate wake of Kirk’s death.

“We don’t have enough resources to protect people who are threatened here. But I don’t want to make us right now. It’s just, it’s horrible,” said representative Eric Swalwell, D-Calif.
