Progressives are pushing Dei, anti-Israeli measures in the bill on national defense

The Chamber is preparing to take its annual bill on defense policy this week, the Democrats tabled hundreds of modifications – many aimed to reprimand the administration of President Donald Trump and the current GOP priorities.

The legislators have submitted around 450 amendments proposed to the Act on the authorization of National Defense for the Fiscount 2026 (NDAA). Among them, the measures dealing with the diversity, the financing of Israel and the repression of Trump against illegal immigration.

The Chamber’s Rules Committee will examine the bill on Monday afternoon and will define parameters of debate, will open the way to a floor vote later this week.

It is unlikely that most progressive amendments survive, stressing their symbolic nature. However, Democrats use the traditionally bipartite defense package to highlight the opposition to the White House and the Republican Directorate.

Representative Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas has deposited several amendments, including one to prohibit the ban on the NDAA to use defense funds for the efforts of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Similarly, representatives Luz Rivas, D-Calif., And Jill Tokuda, D-Hawaii, offered an amendment to block a prohibition on the Pentagon programs.

Crockett has also introduced a language to interrupt the construction of migrant detention facilities on military facilities, which directly puts Trump’s administration policy.

The representative Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., Proposed an amendment prohibiting the funds of the Ministry of Defense to support the processing of migrants and detention.

The Pentagon announced last month that it built the largest detention center for federal migrants in the country in Fort Bliss, Texas.

Representative Delia Ramirez, d-ill., Has deposited two amendments aimed at immigration policies in the Trump era. One would prohibit funding from the separation of families, while another “prohibited funds from being used to transfer non-citizens to foreign prisons, except under extradition treaties and laws”, according to the Rules Committee website. This last proposal would effectively block deportations to Salvador.

Representatives Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., And Ilhan Omar, d-minn., Introduced measures to limit American support to Israel.

The TLAIB amendment would prohibit American arms sales to countries whose governments include officials with arrest mandates (ICC) in progress. The ICC issued mandates at the end of 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior officials.

Omar’s proposal aims to repeal Israel’s emergency access to a stock of weapons managed by the United States located in the country.

NDAA is a bill adopted each exercise which establishes a national security and defense policy for the United States government.

More than 1,000 total modifications were presented to this year’s invoice.
