Zohran Mamdani takes heat to use schoolchildren in his online campaign advertisements even after noting how “lucky” it was to enjoy a childhood without social media.
The 33 -year -old New York town hall candidate, who built his brand on viral content, was criticized by Instagram enthusiasts after presenting interviews with two children promoting his candidacy for the Town Hall.
The criticism also came while New York launched a mobile phone ban on a state level aimed at protecting the mental health of students and before the mayor’s elections. Thursday, Mamdani appeared outside is 5 in Queens, praising the new mobile phone ban while welcoming families for the first day of the school year.
On Instagram, he also shared an article and contrasting his own childhood with today’s digital reality, writing:

“I consider myself lucky-when I was a student, it was before social media could cannibalized the way children interact with each other,” he wrote. The message was twinned with a message back to school on “Hope and New Beginnings”.
But a few days later, Mamdani’s campaign accounts featured the two young children speaking directly to Mamdani and Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-MASS.

In a clip, a girl approved it with confidence; In another, a boy offered his support while Warren was sitting nearby.
“How old is she? So articulated, but she is so small,” said a follower about the little girl.
The criticisms wondered why Mamdani used children in his advertisements on social networks when he has criticized the effects of mobile phones and social media on children.
“Why do you use children to promote your political agenda?” complained about another follower commenting on the post featuring the boy’s interview.
A critic wrote: “He can express his personal opinion and promote whoever he wants, using children to do so is unacceptable.”

Mamdani’s articles featuring the two children also came a few days before the Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, defended the new mobile phone restrictions, arguing that they would reduce distractions, improve mental health and even protect children in an emergency by preventing location sharing.
Hochul discussed the prohibition of the State on the use of mobile phones in the public schools of “Fox News Sunday”.
The new law prohibits smartphones and smart watches during school hours, with the exception of medical or educational use.
