The severity of sleep apnea on weekends is worse than weekdays shows the study

For those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the condition could be clearly worse on weekends.
After studying changes in gravity, researchers at Flinders University in Australia discovered that AOS symptoms were much more important at the end of the week.
The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, analyzed the sleep data of more than 70,000 users of an underwater sleep instructor who followed the gravity of the ASA every day of the week.

The data has been collected for the duration of the sleep, the sleep calendar and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a measure of the severity of sleep apnea.
Participants – mainly men of middle and overweight – had an average of more than five AOS events per night.

The severity of AOS “has increased significantly” on weekends, jumping 18% higher on Saturdays compared to Wednesdays. The overall severity score was 6% higher on weekends compared to weekdays on average.
This increase has proven to be higher in men and in participants under the age of 60.

“This real world study evaluating the variations in the day of the gravity of AOS in more than 70,000 users has revealed a global increase in the severity of AOS on weekends, a phenomenon that we have called” social apnea “, wrote researchers in the study.
The catch -up sleeping of the weekend and the “social jetlag” – which can be defined as a disalcher between someone’s natural circadian pace and their social clock – has led to an increase of 47% and 38%, respectively, in the ratings of AOS during the weekend.

“This is in accordance with the previous results showing that irregular sleep is associated with the chances of the largest AOS,” commented the authors. “Since the AOS is generally more serious during paradoxical sleep, the sleep of the weekend and the social gap are likely to worsen the gravity of the AOS.”

The authors have also identified other factors that may have an impact on the severity of AOS, including an increase in alcohol consumption and smoking.
“Additional research is necessary to better understand the causes and mechanisms behind the new phenomenon of social apnea identified in this study,” they added.

Sleep Expert Wendy Troxel, PHD – A specialist in the main behavior of Range Corporation and approved clinical psychologist in UTAH, which was not involved in the study – also reacted to the results of an interview with Fox News Digital.
“This recent study provides new information on the daily variability of the obstructive gravity of sleep apnea, highlighting what the authors call a social apnea effect, where AOS is getting on weekends,” confirmed Troodel.

Troxel has agreed that these AOS severity fluctuations are probably due to “current weekend behaviors” as an increased consumption of alcohol, treatment of CPAP and “catch up” sleep.
“All these elements can disturb sleep and circadian rhythms and exacerbate the gravity of apnea,” she said.

These results suggest that sleep tests of a single night carried out on weekly evenings can underestimate the severity of the AOS, according to the expert.
“People with AOS should try to maintain coherent sleeping rooms for sleep throughout the week, limit the supply of alcohol and use CPAP treatment as prescribed every evening,” said Troxel.
