Pritzker promised to fight this decision in court, accusing Trump of having tried to occupy an American city for political ends.

“Go talk to the inhabitants of Chicago who take advantage of a magnificent afternoon in this city … Ask if they want their neighborhoods to turn into a war zone by a budding dictator,” said Pritzker, flanked by the mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson and other local officials.

“Donald Trump wants to use the military to occupy an American city, punish its dissidents and score political points. If that happened in another country, we would have no trouble calling it what it is – a dangerous seizure of power.”

The Democrat said Trump was trying to militarize a blue state while simultaneously reducing $ 800 million in federal crime prevention grants. Most subsidies were heading for non -profit organizations and local community groups, not in police or federal police.

Pritzker said that crime rates were down in Chicago, the third city in the country, and that Trump’s story on the city engulfed in crime is manufactured.

For example, he said that murders are down 32% compared to last year and have almost reduced in two since 2021.

“You are neither wanted here nor necessary here,” added Pritzker. “We will see the Trump administration in court. We will use each lever at our disposal to protect the inhabitants of Illinois and their rights.”

Hours earlier, Trump suggested that he would prefer to be “asked” before sending troops. He floated the idea of deploying the National Guard in Chicago, reproducing operations in Washington DC, which has also seen the federal government take control of the local police. According to the latest figures, more than 1,000 arrests were made and the capital lasted 11 days without homicide.

Illinois Gov calls for mass demonstrations against Trump’s administrator: Gop “ cannot know a moment of peace ‘

The national guard units sent without approval from the State are generally limited to the defense of property and federal staff. When the guard troops were deployed in Los Angeles in June for anti-ice demonstrations, they were limited to federal buildings and escort tasks for immigration agents. In Washington, DC, which is under federal competence, the childcare units carried out armed patrols alongside the local police.

“In a way, you really want to ask yourself to go,” Trump told journalists, before taking a hit in Pritzker: “He has to spend more time in the gymnasium.”

Trump continued his attacks on Pritzker and torn the Windy City crime record.

“I think of knowing you, when I have a Slob like Pritzker criticizing us before I even went there. I made the declaration that next year was Chicago because, as you all know, Chicago is a field of murder at the moment and they do not recognize it. And they say, we don’t need him.”

Chicago recorded 573 homicides in 2024, marking the 13th consecutive year, Chicago directed the nation in total murders, according to data from the Chicago police service compiled by Thread.

According to the update of the end of the year of the Council of Criminal Justice in 2024, the serious assaults decreased by 4% compared to 2023, but remained 4% higher than in 2019, the attack on firearms dropped by 15%, although they are still 5% above the levels of 2019, and carjackings dropped by 32% over a year more than 25% that in 2019.

Meanwhile, Johnson echoes Pritzker’s challenge, insisting that the Chicagoans do not want a “military occupation”.

“We think you don’t solve crime by sending the army,” said Johnson. “The last thing the chicagoans want is someone outside our city who does not know our city, trying to dictate and tell us what our city needs.”

Johnson described the “cascade” plan, saying that target Trump targeting is rooted in racism.

“We cannot incarcerate our path of violence. We have already tried this, and we have ended up with the largest prison population in the world without solving the problems of crime and violence,” said Johnson.

“Dependence on prisons and incarceration in this country. We have exceeded this. It is racist. It is immoral. It is impious. And it is not the way of reducing violence.”
