Donald Trump said 600,000 Chinese students would be authorized in the United States to study in colleges in the midst of current trade with China.
Speaking on Monday at the White House, the president’s announcement reports a potential thaw in American-chinoine relations after having increased prices and restrictions on Chinese students.
“I hear so many stories that we are not going to authorize their students,” Trump told journalists.
“We are going to allow their students to come. This is very important, 600,000 students. It is very important. But we will get along with China,” he added.

Trump’s student visa offer comes in the context of commercial talks with the Chinese government.
Earlier this year, the administration imposed a 145% rate on all Chinese products, which prompted Beijing to retaliate with a 125% price on American exports.
Negotiators in Geneva agreed in May to take a break of additional samples, but Trump continued to warn new sanctions.
Last week, he launched a 200% rate on Chinese manufacturing magnets, quoting what he described as the “monopoly” of Beijing on the world market.

“I don’t think we’re going to have a problem with that,” Trump told journalists.
“China, intelligently, has gone and they have somehow taken a monopoly on the magnets of the world. We will probably take a year to have them,” he said.
Currently, around 270,000 Chinese students are registered in American universities.
In May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced its intention to “aggressively revoke” the visas for Chinese nationals, in particular those linked to the Communist Party or to the areas of sensitive research.
Trump has since changed his tone, telling journalists in June that he has “always been in favor” to welcome students from China.

“As you know, we are, we take a lot of money from China because of prices and different things. It is a very important relationship,” said Trump. “It is a much better economically better relationship than before with Biden. But it allowed it. They just took it to the cleaners.”
