The rescue of an experienced mountaineer was canceled in Kyrgyzistan almost two weeks after Natasha Nagovitsina, 47, broke her leg not far from the top of the country’s highest mountain.
Nagovitsina, a Russian climber who collected glory four years ago after refusing to leave her husband after undergoing a stroke, was blocked at 22,965 feet on Victory Peak since August 12, according to the Daily mail. Despite her efforts, her husband died.
The summit of Victory Peak, in the mountain range of Tian Shan on the border with China, is 24,406 feet. Mont Everest, the highest peak in the world, measures 29,032 feet.

The suspension of the rescue mission comes a few days after an Italian climber named Luca Sinigaglia died while trying to help Nagovitsina, the Sarda Union reported.
Sinigaglia died of hypothermia on August 15, after holding herself where Nagovitsina was stuck, giving her a tent, a sleeping bag, food, water and a gas stove, the Daily Mail reported.
Other attempts to save it both by climbing and twice with a helicopter failed, including an effort in a helicopter of the Ministry of Defense who crashed. The accident was four injured, according to London Times.

The last attempt to rescue nagovitsina was abandoned at around 3,000 feet below the place where it is after the time has taken a worse turn.
Rescue chief Dmitry Grekov said that he did not think that Nagovitsina could still be alive, according to the Daily Mail.
“I do not think, because it has been there since August 12-count how long has passed,” he said. “It is unrealistic. It is not realistic to survive such an altitude.”
