Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov may seek China to ongoing negotiations while NATO leaders and Ukrainian officials come together this week to discuss security guarantees for kyiv.

Lavrov suggested that Moscow was only interested in the “really reliable” guarantees for Ukraine, which, according to him, should be based on an agreement of 2022 which was discussed by Ukrainian and Russian negotiators at the start of the war.

But the proposal was never concluded due to a major collision point for kyiv, who argued that the plan gave Moscow too much power over his security.

The proposal would have provided Ukraine with security guarantees provided by a group of nations, including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – of which Russia is part – which kyiv said that he has actually given the veto powers in Moscow on any future attempt to provide it with military aid.

China is also a member of the United Nations Security Council and not only attracted an international examination for its refusal to condemn the illegal invasion of Russia, but faced an international reprimand on its support for Moscow during the war.

“Russia is appropriate that security guarantees for Ukraine are provided on an equal footing with the participation of countries such as China, the United States, Great Britain and France,” said Lavrov on Wednesday, according to a translation of the Russian state media in an article on Telegram.

Although Ukraine is unlikely that Ukraine will accept a plan that would grant Russia, and perhaps China, any authority over its future security, Beijing said that it supported the “fair and objectives” talks.

“China has not created the Ukraine crisis, and China is not a game either. Even thus, China has since the first day an objective and fair position and has promoted discussions for peace,” said the spokesperson for the Chinese embassy, Liu Pengyu to Fox News Digital, pointing the “Four Principles” Plan of Peace that Chinese President Xi Jinping

“China is ready, in the light of the will of the parties concerned and with the rest of the international community, to continue to play a constructive role for the political regulations of the crisis,” added Liu.

Lavrov also accused NATO leaders of “attempts contrary to the ethics of modifying the position of the Trump administration and the President of the United States” after meeting President Donald Trump on Monday in Washington, DC

Few details on meetings have become leaders of Europe, Ukraine and senior officials of the Trump administration, including vice-president JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the sending of the White House Steve Witkoff, seek to establish security terms for Ukraine in order to end the war.

Although Lavrov, who has long made controversial comments, described Monday meetings as “a fairly aggressive climbing of the situation” and “rather clumsy”.

A European diplomat involved in the coordination of security guarantees with the United States told Fox News that Lavrov’s comments had been widely rejected by Washington and NATO allies, and did nothing to derail progress.

“It’s noise,” said the diplomat. “The demonstration of Monday’s unit behind Ukraine put (Russian president Vladimir) Putin on the back. These comments indicate the typical Russian game and non -confidence – at one point, they would do well to seriously engage with the push of President Trump for peace.”
