Russia launched its greatest attack of the month against Ukraine while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump and European leaders at the White House.
The attack also comes after the meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with Trump in Alaska last Friday, during which Putin refused an immediate cease-fire and demanded that Ukraine abandoned his Eastern Donetsk region in exchange for the end of the conflict that began with an invasion of February 2022 by Moscow. Trump later said that he had spoken on the phone with Putin for a meeting between Russian president and Zelenskyy.
The Air Force of Ukraine said that Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles in Ukraine on Monday evening and Tuesday, but that 230 drones and six missiles were intercepted or deleted. The Air Force reported that 40 drones and four missiles had struck 16 locations, and the debris would have dropped on three sites.

“While the hard work to advance peace was underway in Washington, DC … Moscow continued to make the opposite of peace: more strikes and destruction,” wrote Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha on X. “This demonstrates once again how essential it is to end the murder, to achieve sustainable peace.”
Energy infrastructure in the central region of Poltava was a target of strikes, according to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine. The victims’ figures were not immediately released by officials.

“Following the attack, large -scale fires broke out,” the ministry said in a statement.
Oil refining and gas facilities have been attacked, added the ministry, claiming that strikes were the last “systematic terrorist attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which constitutes a direct violation of international humanitarian law”.
The attack was the most important since Russia launched 309 drones and eight missiles in Ukraine on July 31, according to the Air Force.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had shot 23 Ukrainian drones on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

The two parties targeted the infrastructure, including oil facilities.
Zelenskyy had criticized Moscow for strikes earlier Monday before his meeting at the White House during which at least 14 people were killed and dozens of others were injured.
“The Russian war machine continues to destroy lives despite everything. Putin will make demonstrative murders to maintain pressure on Ukraine and Europe, as well as to humiliate diplomatic efforts. This is precisely why we are looking for help to end the killings,” he wrote on Monday morning.
