President Donald Trump supports the Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s proposal for Moscow to take total control of the Donbas region and freeze the front lines elsewhere for an agreement with Ukraine, a European diplomat at Fox News confirmed.
Donbas had an pre-war population of 150,000 and included the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
After meeting Putin on Friday in Alaska, Trump told European allies that the Russian president reiterated that he wanted the main regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, but that he seemed open to the possibility of ending the dead end in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson with a frost in the first row.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously rejected the idea of putting the territory back into the Donbas.

Zelenskyy refused to withdraw from the remaining 30% of Donetsk that Ukraine still controls. He said it would be unconstitutional and that the territory could be used as a staging field for subsequent Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian chef is expected to meet Trump in the White House on Monday.
Trump also denied his support for a ceasefire and rather seeks a peace agreement after the meeting with Putin, who declared a long time that Moscow was not interested in a temporary truce and is looking for a long-term settlement which supports the interests of the Kremlin.

After calls with Zelenskyy and European leaders, Trump said on social networks on Saturday that “he was determined by all that the best way to put an end to the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not to a simple ceasefire agreement, which would not often.”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on ZDF television that Trump said that Russia “seems to be ready to carry out negotiations according to the so-called contact line and not administrative borders”.
In a statement after the call with Trump, the great European leaders did not know if they preferred a peace agreement to a cease-fire.

Putin described her talks with Trump in Alaska as “very frank”.
