Lee in South Korea announces that the Military Pact restoration plan with North Korea

The new liberal president of South Korea announced on Friday his intention to end certain military activities along its border with North Korea and to restore a military agreement of 2018 with his neighbor to reduce border tensions.
Speaking on the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Korea of Japanese colonial domination, President Lee Jae Myung said that he would bring back the so-called full military agreement on September 19, a measure of de-escalation reached between the North Korean leader Kim Jong one and the former liberal president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in.
“Everyone knows that long -term hostility does not benefit people in any of the two Koreas,” said Lee during his speech.

The agreement ended certain military activities on the border between the two countries, in particular by creating buffer zones on land and at sea and non-theft areas above the border to avoid fighting. He also ended the military exercises near the border and withdrew certain guard posts along the demilitarized area.
The agreement was signed at an inter -forest summit in 2018, but finally collapsed while cross -border tensions ensued.
Lee called on the North to respond to Seoul’s efforts to rebuild confidence and revive dialogue, although the way Pyongyang will respond is uncertain.

In recent weeks, the best North Korean officials have rejected other measures by Lee to facilitate tension between the two countries.
The new South President highlighted his government’s efforts to reduce tensions, in particular by stopping the launch of floated balloons by militants with anti-north-booth leaflets and the stopping of loudspeakers’ propaganda emissions across the border.
“In particular, to prevent accidental clashes between South and North Korea and to strengthen military confidence, we will take proactive and progressive measures to restore the military agreement of September 19,” said Lee.

In June of last year, the former South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, announced a complete suspension of the military pact after North Korea sent hundreds of balls stuffed by garbage on the other side of the border. The North had left the pact in November 2023.
