Washington, DC, the police chief, Pamela Smith, published an executive decree on Thursday giving limited cooperation with the federal immigration authorities.

This decision comes after the recent federal takeover of the department and the sending of troops from the National Guard to slow crime and homelessness in the capital.

According to the order, agents of the Metropolitan Police Department can now help “share information on people not in police custody” as during “traffic stops” and can provide “transport for employees of the Federal Immigration Agency and subjects held”, according to the NBC 4 Washington.

However, the order indicates that the staff cannot “do any survey via a database only in order to find out about the immigration status of an individual”.

“Members must not investigate a person’s immigration status in order to determine whether they have violated civil immigration laws or to enforce civil immigration laws,” the order said.

“Members must not stop people on the basis only of federal immigration mandates or prisoners as long as there is no additional criminal mandate or an underlying offense for which the individual is subject to an arrest,” continued the order.

Only Wednesday evening, there were 45 arrests, and 29 of them were people in the country illegally, while many federal agencies participate in major repression.

Although the takeover was welcomed by the Republicans and certain residents of DC, many democrats have opposed vocally. This decision has been largely caused by juvenile criminal activities throughout the city in recent months.

“The actions of the administration are unprecedented, unnecessary and illegal. There is no urgency of crime in the Columbia district. Violent crimes at DC have reached 30 -year historic stockings last year, and down 26% so far this year,” said DC prosecutor Brian Schwalb on Monday. “We are considering all of our options and will do what is necessary to protect the rights and safety of the residents of the district.
