The American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, denounced the decision, calling “Tyranny in disguise”.

“Germany has just given its spy agency new powers to monitor the opposition,” Rubio published on X at the time. “It is not democracy – it is disguised tyranny. What is really extremist is not popular AFD – which took second place during the recent elections – but rather the deadly immigration policies of the open borders of the establishment that AFD is opposed. Germany should reverse the course.”

The party was founded in 2013 as an anti-European movement, but since then has taken a right position on questions like immigration and Islam.
