Most Americans get more than half of the daily calories in ultra-transformed food

A new federal report has revealed that the majority of Americans get more than half of their daily calories from ultra-transformed foods, with hamburgers and sandwiches, sweet bakery products, salty snacks, pizzas and sweet drinks being among the main sources.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention American declared between August 2021 and August 2023, young Americans “consumed 61.9% of their daily calories, on average, from ultra-transformed foods, while adults consumed 53.0% of their daily calories from ultra-transformed foods.”
“Ultra-transformed foods tend to be hyperpalatable, rich in energy, low in dietary fibers and contain little or no whole food, while having high quantities of salt, sweeteners and unhealthy fats”, according to the CDC. “Ultra-suitable food consumption has been associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality of all causes of causes.”
The Secretary of Health and Social Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., told Fox News earlier this year: “We are focused on and this comes mainly from these ultra-treated foods.”

The report indicates: “In August 2021 to August 2023, the average percentage of total calories consumed from ultra-transformed foods among the ages of 1 year and more was 55.0%.”
Young children have consumed less calories in ultra-transformed food than older children, according to the report. Adults aged 60 and over consumed fewer calories in these sources than young adults. Low-income adults have consumed greater foods than those with higher income.
The consumption of ultra-transformed food also seems to be slightly decrease in the last decade. Among adults, total calories in these sources rose from around 56% in 2013-2014 and almost 66% for children in 2017-2018.

“The five main sources of calories from ultra-tangled food in young people were sandwiches (including hamburgers), which contributed 7.6%of total calories, followed by sweet bakery products (6.3%), salty snacks (4.9%), report (4.7%) and sweet drinks (3.9%)”, indicates the report.
“Similarly, the five main sources of calories from ultra-treble food in adults were sandwiches (including burgers), which contributed 8.6%of total calories, followed by sweet bakery (5.2%), sugary drinks (4.4%), salt snacks (3.4%) and rollers, rolls and tortillas (3.1%), “added.

US health officials have recently declared that there were concerns about whether current definitions “precisely capture” the range of foods that can affect health. The US Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture recently published a request for information to develop a new uniform definition of ultra-adjustment food for products in the American food supply.
