Maryland’s only republican warns against potential redistribution threats

The only republican house in the delegation of the Maryland congress warns that its state could lose its main link with the White House if the Democrats made threats to restart the lines of the district.
“At the moment, as the only republican representative, I am the connection between the State and the executive power and the legislative power, and that would be lost if they were going to a single representation,” said representative Andy Harris, R-MD., Said Fox News Digital. “I don’t think the Marylanders will endure this.”
Maryland is one of the last states threatening to jump into the war of increasing redistribution that takes control of American politics.
The Texas Republicans move to change the map of the Star State Congress with a proposal that could give the GOP up to five new seats in the House of Representatives.

The democratic bastions of California and New York threatened to make their own changes in response, which would avoid independent redistribution commissions in the two states.
Since then, the fight has spread to a number of other states, in particular those with an unbalanced representation of the congress, such as Maryland.
The office of the Governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, told Fox News Digital that the Democratic leader “will continue to assess all the options while the states of the country make decisions concerning the redistribution”, while moving the move of Texas as “capture of power”.
“Listen, the governor speaks a lot about bipartisanat. Obviously, it would not be a bipartite bill, to try to make it a single delegation,” Harris told Fox News Digital. “And, you know, an attempt in 2022 failed in court. I think that this time attempt could fail again.”

Harris was wary of a wider fight of redistribution across the country, but accused Democrats – not the Republicans of Texas – of starting the battle.
“I think we should probably avoid rediscovering the middle of the cycle,” said Harris.
He added, however, “listen, the Democrats started. I am not surprised that Texas wanted to do what they want to do.”
Harris underlined states like Alabama, where a long legal battle led to the state of Ruby-Red in a second democratic district before the 2024 elections.
The voting rights groups had argued that an existing card of Republicans unjustly violated the 1965 voting law by eliminating the representation of black voters in the state. He led to Alabama to adopt a map approved by the court with two majority black districts, which are currently represented by Democrats.

“The main thing is that the Democrats began the discussion to find out whether the redistribution would be accomplished or not in the middle of the cycle,” said Harris.
And despite his distrust of the practice now, Harris congratulated President Donald Trump’s call to an instant census that would illegally exclude anyone in the United States.
“I think that the Americans should realize that if we did not count illegal foreigners in our census, there are 10 to 12, perhaps 15 less democrats in the House of Representatives,” said Harris.
