Vice-President JD Vance took a conciliatory tone on Friday after approaching London when he told journalists that the United States and the United Kingdom could disagree on the strategy when it comes to putting an end to the war in Gaza, but they “share” the same peace objective.

“We do not intend to recognize a Palestinian state,” said Vance before a meeting with the British Foreign Minister David Lammy. “I don’t know what it would really mean to recognize a Palestinian state, given the lack of functional government there.

“Obviously, this is not an easy problem to solve, or it would have already been treated,” he added, noting the need not only to eradicate Hamas, but to put an end to the humanitarian crisis through the Gaza Strip. “But we share, I think, this orientation and this objective.

“We can have disagreements on how to achieve exactly this goal, and we will talk about it today,” added Vance.

It is not known how the United States will increase its involvement to help with food aid, but the Trump administration has moved away from its best allies with regard to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, with Trump saying on Monday that it was “roughly in Israel”.

The plan should always be condemned to international conviction, but this is not the only problem at the top of Western minds when Vance and Lammy meet on Friday.
