NASA had discussions on the construction of a reactor on the lunar surface, but the Duffy directive gives a more final calendar and accelerates the process. Duffy is also the temporary administrator of the space agency.

“The surface power of the fission (FSP) is both an essential and lasting segment of the architectures of lunar power and Mars for future missions of exploration of human space”, indicates the directive. “To properly advance this critical technology to be able to support a future lunar economy, a high energy production on Mars and to strengthen our national security in space, it is imperative that the agency moves quickly.”

China and Russia have repeatedly announced a joint effort to place a reactor on the moon in the mid -2030s, NASA said. In the event of success, this would potentially lead to the declaration of a “conservation zone”, which could prevent the United States from establishing a presence there.

This decision means that NASA will continue to contribute to nuclear development, despite the recent cancellation by the Pentagon of a joint program on nuclear propulsion rocket engines.

Duffy also published another directive to quickly replace the international space station, a priority for NASA.
