The republican bill would block funds for the hiring of illegal immigrants

First on Fox: A republican legislator moves to prevent states from illegally authorizing people who come to the United States or who reside here illegally to become police officers.
The representative Kat Cammack, r-Fla., This week presented a bill to arrest federal funds to the law enforcement organizations that employ illegal immigrants as officers.
“My husband, Matt, he serves our community as a first speaker, as a firefighter, and as a Swat Medic. And so we have very close links with the police community. And he was really frustrating to see the challenges they have undergone in the last decade,” Cammack told Fox News in an interview on Thursday.

“And, you know, being a curator, we have looked at the whole movement of the funded police – and now he came from the place where, due to challenges of retention and recruitment following the actions of the regressive left, now the departments are so desperate that they seek to hire illegals to fill their ranks. And it’s horrible.”
In addition to blocking funds for police if they hire illegal immigrants as officers, the bill would require that only American citizens can serve as law enforcement agents.
This comes after immigrants and customs (ICE) stopped a Jamaican national for having pretended to buy an illegally working gun while working as a reserve policeman in Maine.

Federal officials said that the man, Jon Luke Evans, had exceeded his visa after legally entered the United States in 2023. He would have said that he wanted to buy firearms as part of his law role.
Chief Elise Chard of the Old Orchard Beach police department said that Evans had been authorized to work by the E-VERIFY system of the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS) in May this year.
DHS assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, told Local Outlet Wmtw that the “reckless dependence of the ministry to velification” does not have “absolute” of its “legal duty to verify the authenticity of the documentation”.

Meanwhile, several states, including California, Illinois and Colorado, have laws allowing non-citizens of the work authorization, such as DACA beneficiaries, to become police officers.
The delayed action policy for children’s arrivals (DACA) protects people brought to the United States illegally as a child of expulsion and who would not have legal status.
