Former vice-president Kamala Harris confirmed on Wednesday that she will not enter the race of the governor of California in 2026, finishing months of increasing speculation on a return to politics after an overwhelming defeat in the 2024 presidential race in Donald Trump.

In a press release published on her X account, Harris said she had “thought deeply” and decided not to ask for her elected duties “for the moment”.

“For the moment, my leadership – and the public service – will not be based on elected officials. I can’t wait to come back and listen to the American people, to help Democrats across the country who will fight without fear, and to share more details in the coming months on my own plans,” Harris wrote in a press release.

Harris, who was a prosecutor general of California and later the American senator before becoming vice-president of President Joe Biden in 2021, was largely considered as a leading competitor to succeed the Democratic Governor Limited by term Gavin Newsom.

Although she called California “my house” and expressed her pride in serving the state, Harris said her efforts would be concentrated elsewhere.

The announcement reconfigures the primary democratic domain of 2026, potentially opening the way to candidates such as Lieutenant-Governor Eleni Kounalakis, the attorney general Rob Bonta and the former mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, to mount the less congested campaigns.

Governor of California Gavin Newsom replied via X, writing that he is “grateful for his service”.

“Kamala Harris courageously served our state and our country throughout her career. Whether as a prosecutor, attorney general, senator or vice-president, she has always kept a simple commitment to the heart of each decision she made: for people.” Said Newsom.

“Kamala Harris’ political career is over thanks to President Trump. Looks further than her decision not to appear to the post of governor. She would have been a disaster for California: Tanker even more state economics, protecting illegal criminal immigrants from laws respectful of laws, and the director of the Democratic response Kollin Crompton, just as she did as a vice-president” said RGA Rapid Director Kollin Crompton. “Americans across the country can sigh in relief that they will no longer have to see or hear Kamala Harris.”

The sheriff of the candidate for the Republican Governor Chad Bianco told Fox News Digital that he was not surprised to see Kamala Harris refusing to enter the race of the Governor of California and thinks that it facilitated his way to victory. “It will catapult me in a victory next November,” said Bianco. “Now we get seats at first row to watch the Democratic Party implode in California.”

Bianco said California has big problems to solve. “We have a favored criminal justice system that promotes criminals on the victims,” he said. “It’s too expensive to live here, and now it’s not even sure.” As for the democratic hopes of the Democratic Governor? “They are all responsible for the mess in which we are. It is the best of the worst that the Democratic Party has to offer.”

“From the prosecutor to the senator via the vice-president, Kamala Harris has always been for the people. I know that his next chapter will not be different, whatever the form that is necessary,” wrote the former presidential candidate and Democratic colleague Hillary Clinton.

Hunter Biden, son of Former President Joe Bidendid not chew the words either. “It’s interesting,” Biden told Fox News for the choice of Harris to leave the race.

In her post X, Harris seemed to point out that she did not completely withdraw from politics. “We must be willing to continue the change by new methods and a new reflection-committed to our same values and principles, but not linked by the same manual,” she wrote. “My leadership – and the public service – will not be based on elected officials.”
