Thailand and Cambodia have concluded a cease-fire agreement “by trade,” President Donald Trump announced on Monday, ending an emerging conflict that has moved 260,000 people.
Trump’s statement comes after saying during the weekend he had spoken to the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, urging a cease-fire, adding that the United States would not return to the “trade table” with the countries of Southeast Asia until the fight stops.
The fighting began Thursday after an explosion of terrestrial mines along the wounded border five Thai soldiers. The two parties blamed themselves for starting the clashes that killed at least 35 people and moved more than 260,000 people on both sides.
“Many people have been killed and I am dealing with two countries with which we get along very well, countries very different from certain points of view. They have been fighting for 500 years. And, we have resolved this war … We have resolved it by trade,” Trump told journalists during his trip to Scotland.

“I said,” I don’t want to chat with someone who kills himself. “So we got this one.
“By finishing this war, we saved thousands of lives. I asked my sales team to restart trade negotiations. I have now ended many wars in just six months – I am proud to be the president of peace!” Trump added in an article on Truth Social.
As part of the ceasefire agreement, military commanders on both sides will begin to meet on Tuesday to defuse tensions while Cambodia will organize a meeting of the border committee on August 4, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
