The Trump administration offers $ 608 million to states willing to extend migrant detention efforts.
The money, announced through the new Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Detention support subsidies program (DEP), aims to help states to build or expand temporary detention facilities modeled after the compound of Florida’s Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz”, according to FEMA documents.
“The secretary of the Ministry of Internal Security), Kristi Noem, was very clear that the Alligator Alcatraz can be a plan for other states and local governments to help detention,” a spokesman for the DHS on Friday.
Funding is part of the Fema Shelter and Services program and is open to requests until August 8, by FEMA’s announcement.

The program is intended to accelerate the construction of secure and temporary detention sites on state or local land, avoiding long delays in supply.
Noem criticized federal and slow federal entrepreneurs, and encouraged governors to play a more direct role.
“They were ready to build it and do it much faster than some of the other sellers,” said Noem about Florida. “And it was a real solution that we can use if we need it.”
The installation of Florida was built in only eight days on distant Everglades at Dade-Collier airport. It contains up to 3,000 migrants and is surrounded by fences, marshes and natural barriers.
During a visit on July 1, President Donald Trump congratulated him as “so professional, so well done”, calling “a model that we would like to see in many states”.
“We are surrounded by kilometers of treacherous marshes, and the only way out is really the deportation,” he added.

Florida officials confirmed They are looking for the reimbursement of FEMA to help cover the estimated annual operating cost of $ 450 million on the camp. State officials claim that the site is eligible for federal funding under the new grant guidelines.
According to Noem, five states are currently in talks with DHS on the construction of similar detention facilities.
“We have had several other states that really use Alligator Alcatraz as a model for the way they can associate with us,” she said in a recent press briefing.

“I hope my phone would be governors who call and said,” How can we do what Florida has just done? “”
The new funding comes as immigration and customs application (ICE) aim to double the detention capacity.
Ice reported more than 56,000 migrants in detention in June, the highest since 2019, and aims at 100,000 beds by the end of the year, according to DHS Planning Materials.
The funds will be distributed by FEMA in partnership with customs and border protection, depending on the publication of DHS.
