The United States withdrew his Doha delegation, where he participated in ceasefire negotiations this week, according to United States sent from the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

The announcement occurred on the same day as the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced that his negotiators in Doha would also leave Hamas’ response. Witkoff also met Israeli and Qataris officials in Rome on Thursday, according to reports.

“We decided to bring our team back to Doha’s house for consultations after Hamas’ last response, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,” Witkoff said in a statement on Thursday.

“While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not seem to be coordinated or acting in good faith. We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the inhabitants of Gaza.”

Witkoff added that it was a “shame” of Hamas acted in such a “selfish” way, adding that the United States is resolved in its efforts to provide permanent peace to the region.

According to Israeli media, Hamas is now asking for the release of 200 Palestinians serving perpetuity sentences for the murder of Israelis and an additional 2,000 Palestinians in Gaza after October 7.

The demand considerably exceeds the previous framework supported by the mediator accepted by Israel, which included the release of 125 life imprisonment and 1,200 other detainees.

During a briefing by the State Department on Thursday, the main spokesperson Tommy Pigott would not develop any details concerning the “alternative options” that the United States was considering in its efforts to bring hostages home and create a more stable environment in Gaza.

“At this point, (there is no) to preview,” Pigott told journalists.

Pigott was also asked if the United States would never work within the framework of Doha to advance negotiations, a framework that included representatives of Egypt, Qatar, Hamas, Israel and the United States, but it was not the same shared details on this front.

“In the end, the declaration in special envoy speaks of itself, but I think that the broader context here is also important. The fact that we saw the Hamas break first this cease-fire which existed on October 7, then break another ceasefire, then, here, as the special envoy does clearly, not act in a way in a way to reach a ceasefire,” said Pigott on Thursday. “So, to repeat, the question was never our commitment to a cease-fire. He was Hamas. They showed it again and again and again and showed it again.”

“Israel has long accepted an agreement on the table and Hamas has long rejected it,” he added.

During the press briefing on Thursday in the State Department, the agency also confirmed that the United States would not participate in a next United Nations conference to discuss a potential two-state solution between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
