The very first defense commissioner of the European Union issued a striking warning: the “most dangerous moment” in the world could arrive in 2027, when Russia and China could coordinate the aggressive measures designed to overwhelm the Western defenses.

Andrius Kubilius, the EU defense and space commissioner, echoed the recent remarks by General de l’Air Force Alexus Grynkewich, NATO commander for air operations. The two officials stressed 2027 as a potential year of flash point when simultaneous military actions in Moscow and Beijing could extend the Transatlantic Alliance to its limits.

“The most dangerous moment can be in 2027 when Russia and China will do these aggressive movements in a coordinated manner,” Kubilius told journalists during a briefing in Washington.

Grynkewich had warned last week that the United States and its European allies should be ready to fight two wars simultaneously – one in Europe, if Russian president Vladimir Putin intensifies in Ukraine or Eastern Europe, and another in the Pacific if Chinese President Xi Jinping is launching an invasion of Taiwan.

“We are going to need each kit and equipment and ammunition we can beat this,” said Grynkewich.

In a speech later Monday evening, Kubilius said that the United States had the “right and reason” to turn to China.

“We recognize that you, the Americans, really have the right and reason in the longer term perspective to start moving more and more towards Indo-Pacific in order to mitigate the growing Chinese military power,” he said.

“We, Europeans, must accelerate our defense capacities,” said the former Lithuanian Prime Minister, adding: “This is what we do.”

Their warnings are aligned with growing concerns in the American defense establishment on what is often called the “Davidson window” – a term invented by the former head of the Indo -Pacific command Philip Davidson, who testified before the Congress in 2021 that China could try to meet with Taiwan by 2027. soldiers for a potential cream.

The 2027 window has taken an additional emergency as China quickly accelerates its military modernization program, aimed at achieving what Xi Jinping called the “world class” war capacities. Time time – simultaneously place strategic pressure on two fronts.

Kubilius went to Washington to assess the potential European defense capacities deficits while the United States is increasingly alleviating its strategic attention to Indo-Pacific. He said that EU member states were actively preparing for a change in the American military posture on the continent.

In 2025, more than 80,000 American soldiers were stationed in Europe – a presence that should decrease in the coming years when the Pentagon pressed its European allies to assume greater responsibility for their own defense.

“We are preparing to assume responsibility for our shoulders,” said Kubilius. “We don’t know what Americans will decide.”

Kubilius stressed that Europe must not only finance its own defense, but also build it. He noted that the EU had reduced its dependence on weapons manufactured in the United States by 60% of total imports to 40%, and hopes to reduce this dependence more thanks to the increase in domestic production.
