Democratic Socialist Omar Fateh won the DFL approval for the mayor of Minneapolis

Fateh announced the approval of the Farmer-Labor Democratic Party (DFL) on social networks. He obtained approval against the outgoing mayor Jacob Frey, also a democrat.

“I am incredibly honored to be the candidate approved by the DFL for the mayor of Minneapolis. This approval is a message that the residents of Minneapolis made with promises, vetos and politics as usual. It is a mandate to build a city that suits us to all,” wrote Fateh on X.

The DFL did not immediately respond to a request for comments from Fox News Digital.

Fateh has received many comparisons with Zohran Mamdani from New York. Like Mamdani, Fateh is a Muslim Democratic Socialist and, at 35, another member of generation Y.

Frey criticized the approval by Fateh’s DFL in a campaign statement, arguing that the Party Convention where the decision was taken was “irregular”.

“This election should be decided by the whole city rather than by the small group of people who have become delegated, in particular in the light of the extremely imperfect and irregular convention of this convention,” said campaign spokesperson Sam Schulenberg.

The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, criticized the approval by the DFL of Omar Fateh.

“Voters will now have a clear choice between the files and the management of Senator Fateh and Mayor Frey. We are impatient to bring our vision to voters in November,” added Schulenberg.
