People for the ethical animal treatment (PETA) applaud a letter sent on Thursday by republican legislators to the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, urging the agency to stop using dollars taxpayers for experiences on animals in foreign laboratories.

The letter, signed by the representative Troy Nehls, R-Texas, and Senator Rick ScottR-Fla., Highlights concerns about lack of surveillance and inadequate standards in certain foreign facilities.

The bipartite law on animal research (cargo) law – led by the Republicans with the representative Dina Titus, D -NEV., And Senator Cory Booker, DN.J. – Seeks to end the financing of the NIH for animal experiences outside the United States and ensure that the dollars of taxpayers are not badly used for the unnecessary suffering of animals.

Between 2011 and 2021, the NIH granted more than $ 2.2 billion in grants for controversial research in 45 countries.

According to the letter, “research” included cats that genetically modify to be born with distorted legs, infecting bats with transmissible and fatal diseases for humans, and human fame with mouse that feed on force.

Nehls and Scott Note that there are few or no inspections in the facilities where research is carried out or where animals are hosted, and there is an inadequate audit of animal studies financed by NIH, resulting in significant surveillance and responsibility gaps in the way the dollars of taxpayers are used.

“It is deeply worrying that the dollars of American taxpayers were used to finance experiences of harmful and abusive animals abroad which do not have the same surveillance and the same responsibility as the laboratories here in the United States,” wrote Nehls and Scott in the letter. “… It is a waste of resources that should be allocated to more ethical and effective research practices that do not involve animals.”

The main vice-president of PETA, Kathy Guillermo, said that the organization was grateful to Nehls, Scott, Titus and Booker for having been the main sponsors of the Cargo Act.

“This effort represents an important step in stopping the cruel and unnecessary experimentation of animals abroad, and it aligns with the broader change from the Trump administration to more relevant non -animal research methods,” Guillermo wrote in a declaration to Fox News Digital. “We are delighted to continue working alongside these legislators dedicated to adopting the law on freight and ensuring that taxpayers’ money is no longer used to support unnecessary research and contrary to ethics.”

The CARGO Act was introduced following a PETA investigation into Caucaseco Scientific Research Center, a discredited Colombian laboratory with a history of violation of animal protection standards.

The Caucaseco Scientific Research Center has received more than $ 17 million in American funding, and the NIH of the Biden administration encouraged additional funding, even after being surprised by confining monkeys in dirty conditions, letting them die of infected injuries and hungry mice at the point of cannibalism, according to Pea.

The PETA investigation would have led to multiple surveys by local authorities, the rescues of 108 monkeys and 180 mice, and the retraction of a research publication.

“The request for the letter for NIH immediately ceases to finance animal experiences in foreign laboratories is a crucial step towards animal protection and the guarantee that the dollars of taxpayers are used in a responsible manner,” wrote Guillermo. “PETA remains determined to defend the legislative and political changes that prioritize ethical, practical and non -animal research.”
