Time Blindness explains why some people are chronically late, say the experts

Chronic delay can be frustrating for those waiting and are often attributed to laziness and negligence.

But the experts say that a health problem entitled Time Blindness could be to blame for the perpetual delay.

Often poorly understood as an inability to perceive time, the condition disrupts a person’s ability to estimate how long it will take to perform tasks, affecting everything, from daily routines to long -term productivity.

In daily life, temporal blindness can manifest itself as missed deadlines, the difficulty of transition between tasks or underestimating the duration of a task, causing stress and frustration, according to experts.

Socially, it can be interpreted as disrespectful or neglecting behavior towards others, potentially harm relations.

“The cardinal characteristic of temporal blindness is an inability to estimate an interval of time,” said Dr. Mauran Sivananthan, a psychiatrist at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Michigan, in Fox News Digital.

This can negatively affect a person’s ability to use time as a guide to plan the day.

“ I am a neurologist – This is why dementia increases and how to reduce your risk ”

Laurie Singer, analyst of behaviors certified to the board of directors at Laurie Singer Behavioral Services in California, reiterated that those with agnosia of time – another name for the condition – are unable to correctly treat the passing time.

“They usually find it difficult to know how long or how long has it stayed for a task,” she told Fox News Digital.

“When something has to be done, it is better to do it right away.”

For example, someone can poorly calculate the time it takes to prepare in the morning, rush through the door and arrive late.

Others can be absorbed in an activity (a symptom known as Hyperfocus), completely losing track of time, noted the expert.

Causes of temporal blindness

Temporal blindness is considered an “executive function problem,” said Sivananthan.

The executive function refers to skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibition control.

These skills are essential for daily tasks such as plans, solve problems and adapt to new situations, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Temporal blindness is most often linked to ADHD (hyperactivity disorder of the attention deficit).

“Various parts of the brain are affected by ADHD, including the prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum,” said Sivananthan. “There have been many studies on the role of the cerebellum in the treatment of time.”

The condition can also appear in autistic people, OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), traumatic brain lesions, depression, anxiety and even conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, according to experts.

Temporal blindness is not listed in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-5), which is the reference book accepted for mental health and brain conditions, noted Singer.

Although there is no formal diagnosis for the disease, the inability to perceive and manage time is included in the DSM-5 criterion for ADHD.

How to manage the blindness of time

Treatment of time blindness often involves a multilayer approach, starting by minimizing delays, according to Sivathan.

“When something has to be done, it is better to do it right away,” he told Fox News Digital.

It can also be useful to use external devices to keep track of the time spent on an activity.

Sivanathan often recommends that his patients are timer before taking the shower or starting a project, for example.

The singer added: “When provided with some of the tools to alleviate the symptoms, as to start every day in the same way to create a rhythm, I saw patients approach it with exceptional diligence.”

Experts agree that the usual behavior can provide the advantages of “structure, predictability, reduction in decision -making, increased productivity and improvement in time management”.

Sivananthan recommends dividing large tasks into smaller and more manageive pieces and creating coherent routines that “cause the brain” and reduce the cognitive load.

Although temporal blindness may not disappear entirely, it can be considerably reduced thanks to the use of coherent routines, visual aid and regular therapy, according to experts.
