The Ukrainian ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova leaves Washington, DC, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

This decision comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks to inject new blood into American-Ukrainian relations. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the change in a broadcast on Ukrainian radio on Wednesday.

“It is extremely effective and charismatic, but each diplomat has a rotation cycle,” said Sybiha.

Markarova made the headlines for his reaction to the disastrous meeting of President Donald Trump with Zelenskyy inside the oval office at the end of February. Markarova could be seen by holding his head in despair while Trump and Vice-President JD Vance referred Zelenskyy.

Markarova also faced criticism from the Republicans to be too supportive in his relations with Washington. Chamber Mike Johnson called him in September 2024 for welcoming what he described as a campaign event for Democrats a few weeks before the general elections.

The event saw Zelenskyy visit an ammunition factory in Pennsylvania alongside politicians and democratic officials. Johnson noted that no republican was invited to the event and demanded Zelenskyy Fire Markarova.

Johnson said that the tour “deliberately excluded” the Republicans, the appellant “electoral interference”.

“The installation was in a state of a politically contested battle, was led by a political mastery of Kamala Harris and did not include a single republican because – on purpose – no republican was invited,” Johnson wrote in a letter to Zelenskyy, noting the presence of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

He said that the “short and intentionally political decision” prompted Republicans to “lose confidence” to Markarova’s ability to serve a fair and effective diplomat.
