Texas Gov. Greg Abbott On Wednesday, called on a special session to consider legislation in order to improve alert systems and emergency interventions in areas subject to floods through the state.

The proclamation comes a few days after the death of more than 100 people, and nearly 200 other people disappeared, in July Texas Hill Country Flood.

The floods, caused by excessive precipitation near the Guadalupe river, swept people and houses in several counties early Friday morning. Officials said the river increased by almost 30 feet in 45 minutes.

Following the catastrophe, which cost the life of 27 campers in a youth camp by the river, the citizens criticized an apparent lack of prior opinion.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said that the notifications had been extended approximately 12 hours before the tragedy, although the warning remained “moderate”.

Abbott has specifically called for new legislation to improve early alert systems and other preparation infrastructure, strengthen emergency communications and other response infrastructure, provide help funding and assess and rationalize rules and regulations to accelerate the preparation and recovery of natural disasters.

Another legislation requires unrelated to floods, but included in proclamation surrounded by education, taxes, abortion, trafficking in human beings, crime and public security, elections and repeat and products derived from hemp.

Democrats previously allegedly alleged that more than 880 NOAA workers had been dismissed, although a spokesperson does not confirm a specific number.
