A new study suggests that intestinal microbes can help protect humans from “long -term durable chemicals.

Scientists at the University of Cambridge have identified that a “intestinal microbiome could play a useful role in eliminating toxic pfas chemicals from our body” following a mouse study, according to a press release.

The per- and polyfluoroalkyle substances, better known as PFAS, “are widely used, durable chemicals, of which components decompose very slowly over time,” said the US Environmental Protection Agency.

“We have found that certain species of human intestinal bacteria have a remarkably high capacity to absorb the APFs from their environment to a range of concentrations, and to store them in clusters inside their cells,” said Dr. Kiran Patil, in a press release.

“Due to the aggregation of PFAs in these tufts, the bacteria themselves seem protected from toxic effects,” he said.

Researchers say that more than 4,700 PFAS chemicals are widely used today. Some quickly leave the body through urine; Others could linger for years.

PFAs are a group of human manufacturing chemicals that repel heat, water, oil and stains. Developed in the 1940s, they were still used in non -stick pans, fire fighting foams and stains test, but are now linked to hormonal disturbance, immune suppression and cancers. (Issam Ahmed / AFP)

“We are all exposed to PFAs through our water and our food – these chemicals are so widespread that they are in all of us,” said Dr. Anna Lindell, researcher at the MRC toxicology unit of the University of Cambridge and the first author of the study, in a press release.

“The PFAs were once considered safe, but it is now clear that it is not the case. It took a long time for the PFA to notice because at low levels, they are not very toxic. But they are like a slow poison,” she said.

Patil and Lindell are now working to create probiotic supplements in order to increase the amount of beneficial microbes in people’s guts to help protect against APF damage.

Until then, researchers say that people can help protect themselves from exposure to APFAs by avoiding cooking pots coated with PFAS and using a “good water filter”.

“Given the extent of the problem of” chemicals forever “, in particular their effects on human health, it is worrying that so few things happen to remove these bodies,” said Patil.
