The use of long -term chatgpt could have negative effects on brain function.
It is according to a study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which revealed that the use of a large language model (LLM) to write several trials over a period of four months could hinder cognitive capacities.
In the study, 54 participants were divided into three groups.

A group used Chatgpt, an LLM product manufactured by Openai, to write a test.
The second group used only one search engine and the third group used only its own brain, according to a press release from the MIT.

The participants underwent three sessions where they finished the same mission. Then, during the fourth session, the LLM group was invited to write a test without any tools, and the “Brain only” group was invited to use an LLM to obtain help.
During each session, the researchers recorded the brain activity of the participants using an EEG monitor to assess their “cognitive commitment and their cognitive charge” and to determine their neuronal activity, the release said.

Participants also provided their own individual comments during interviews.
Human teachers and an artificial intelligence agent obtained the assessments.
“EEG analysis has presented solid evidence that LLM groups, the search engine and the brain had significantly different neural connectivity models, reflecting divergent cognitive strategies,” the researchers wrote.

Participants showed less brain connectivity when they used the tools to help write their trials, according to the study.
“The brain group only presented the strongest and widest networks; the group of search engines has shown an intermediate commitment; and LLM assistance caused the lowest overall coupling,” wrote the researchers.

During the fourth session, the participants who went from LLM to Brain only showed “lower neural connectivity” and less cognitive commitment.
The LLM group also had less ability to recall the information of the tests they had just written.
Those who went from the brain only to LLM had a “higher memory reminder” and a greater cognitive commitment.

Based on these results, the researchers said that there could be a “possible reduction in learning skills” among LLM users.
“The use of LLM had a measurable impact on our participants, and although the advantages are initially apparent, as we demonstrated during four sessions … The participants of the LLM group made it possible to do worse than their counterparts in the group reserved for the brain at all levels: neural, linguistic (and) score”, they wrote.
Potential limitations
The results were downloaded from Arxiv, a preparation service, but have not yet been evaluated by peers, because the researchers noted that “all the conclusions must be processed with caution and as a preliminary”.
There was also a limited number of participants who were all in the same geographical area.

“For future work, it will be important to include a greater number of participants from various horizons, such as professionals from different areas and age groups, as well as ensuring that the study is more balanced by the sexes,” noted researchers.
Only the Chatppt was used in the study; Future research could incorporate other LLM.
The EEG technology used to analyze brain connectivity could also have certain limits, because researchers have shared plans for using MID (functional magnetic resonance imaging) in future studies.

“Our results are dependent on the context and focus on writing a test in an educational framework and may not generalize between tasks,” they also said.
“Future studies should also consider exploring the longitudinal impacts of the use of tools on memory retention, creativity and mastery of writing.”

Dr. Harvey Castro, doctor ER and “futuristic AI” based in Texas, said that he considered this study as a “neuro-reversing call”, especially for younger brains.
“Chatgpt can give you 60% faster, but this speed has the price of neuro-enlisted,” said Castro, who was not involved in the study, at Fox News Digital.
“Brain connectivity collapses from 79 neural links to only 42, and 83% of users cannot cite their own trials a few minutes later. The search for neuroplasticity tells us that brain development will feel the hardest.”
In emergency medicine, Castro said, doctors call it “lack of code”.
“The brain does not treat and stored information,” he said. “When neural connectivity drops by almost half, we examine what researchers call” cognitive debt “.
For medical students, an inability to code and recall pressure information could have serious implications for clinical decision -making, Castro noted.

“The same neural networks that consolidate information on tests are involved in diagnostic reasoning,” he said.
The use of LLMS for prolonged periods can be practical, but could ensure that the “atrophy” cognitive muscles over time, the expert.
However, there was an encouraging discovery.

In education, he underlined the need for periods of “cognitive development without AI”.
