The Anti-Defamation League, which tracks anti-Semitic activity across the country, this week launched a “Mamdani Monitor” to track the actions of Zohran Mamdani, the elected mayor of New York.

The announcement of this initiative came after Mamdani was elected mayor of the largest city in the United States. Critics have accused Mamdani of anti-Semitism, citing his creation of the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Bowdoin College, his past statements and positions, and the anti-Israel individuals who have supported him.

“In light of Mayor-elect Mamdani’s long and disturbing record on issues of deep concern to the Jewish community, the ADL is monitoring and responding to the new administration’s policies and appointments,” the ADL said on its website.

In a video posted to the ADL’s Instagram page, Jonathan Greenblatt, the group’s executive director, noted that New York City has the largest Jewish population of any city in the world.

“He stood out to us because of the fierce animosity toward the Jewish state that characterized his entire career in public life,” Greenblatt said. “So given his background, the people around him, the ideas that he’s pursued, yes, we have concerns.”

Greenblatt cited Mamdani’s promises to continue the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel. Mamdani also refused to condemn phrases such as “globalizing the Intifada,” which calls for global resistance against Israel, and other anti-Israel slogans, Greenblatt said.

In addition to launching a tip line for Jewish New Yorkers to report anti-Semitism, the ADL said it would increase its research to focus on the mayor-elect’s appointments within his administration, which could affect the policies implemented.

The “Mamdani Monitor” has drawn criticism from some, particularly Jewish groups. J Street, a liberal pro-Israel Jewish organization, called the tracker “alarming.”

“It is alarming to see the ADL announce an anti-Semitism ‘tracker’ targeting Mamdani and the Conference of Presidents release a series of extraordinary statements without applying the same scrutiny to Trump – despite his long history of using anti-Semitism and intolerance for political purposes,” the group wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“We need our community institutions to fight hate in all its forms, wherever it comes from – not selective inflation of fear aimed at scoring political points or stoking community panic.”
