2,000 -year -old city ruins discovered by archaeologists in Alexandria, Egypt

Archaeologists from Alexandria, Egypt, recently recovered the ruins and relics of a 2,000 -year -old city.

The divers plunged into the waters off the bay of Abu Qir, withdrawing various artefacts and revealing construction structures.

The secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, Mohamed Ismail, told Reuters that the artifacts date back to successive periods from the Ptolemaic era.

Ismail said that the Ptolemaic era “was just after the construction of the city of Alexandria, to the Roman era”.

He added: “This indicates that the region was prosperous and developed since the creation of Alexandria in the Ptolemaic era, after Alexander the Great, and continued in the Roman era, until more recently.”

The Ptolemaic era lasted from 305 to 30 BCE, according to Smithsonian magazine.

The authorities believe that the old quays and the port they found were an extension of the city of Canopus, which would be known as a party and a religious city.

The divers also discovered a quartz statue of a cartridge of Ramses II. Ramses ruled ancient Egypt from 1279 to 1213 BCE, according to the ministry’s press release.

A stone statue of an unknown ptolemaic individual and a white marble statue of a noble Roman person were also determined.

Pottery ships and dishes, stone anchors, water tanks, temples and parts have also been discovered.

The officials claim that the recovery marks an important step in the national plan of Egypt to study, preserve and present its submerged heritage.

Discoveries also prove how natural events in history, such as earthquakes, can cause ancient cities once in the Mediterranean Sea.
